The Trope Everyone’s Secretly Obsessed With Right Now
I spend a lot of time around here talking about tropes, which means I spend a lot of time listening to readers declare which ones they’d never. Never love triangles. Never secret babies. Never, under any circumstances, a cowboy.
Here’s what years of shameless observation have taught me. The trope you’re secretly obsessed with is the one you swore you’d never read.
It happens the same way every time, and it’s a better romance arc than most romances. Stage one: contempt. You announce to the group chat that grumpy sunshine is overdone and you simply don’t see it. Stage two: the exception. A friend whose taste you trust says yes, obviously, but this one is different. You read it under protest, for science. Stage three: the fall. It’s midnight. You’re highlighting. You have opinions about a fictional grump that you’re prepared to defend in public.
Stage four is the best one. Stage four is you, three weeks later, typing that exact trope into our filters like it owes you money.
If you think about it, this is the most romance-coded thing about romance readers. Romance readers are a community devoted to enemies to lovers, and somehow none of us can see that we do the same thing with the tropes. You didn’t like him at first either. That was the whole point.
Why does it work this way? Because a trope on paper is just a premise, and premises are easy to dismiss. Fake dating sounds ridiculous right up until you’re the one watching two idiots fall for their own performance. Only one bed is a logistics problem right up until the lights go out. The trope was never the thing. The trope is a promise about a very specific feeling, and you can’t know how a feeling fits until someone makes you wear it.
So here is my challenge, offered with love and zero remorse. Go to the filters. Pick the trope you’ve been loudly refusing at parties. Choose your heat level so nothing ambushes you, and read one. Just one. For science.
Then come find me on socials and tell me I was right. I’ll reply with a heart and the word good.
Obsessively yours,
Sofia
